May 5, 2022 (San Rafael, CA)—PAX Scientific CEO Jay Harman announced today the receipt of an SBIR Department of Defense Phase II contract from the US Navy.
The combination of PAX’s modular, low-cost, low-temperature water purification system with hydrogen electrolyzers and renewable energy sources provides not only a long-term sustainable DER but enables the first viable Distributed Water Resource, for practical water and energy resiliency in shore installations, naval operations, logistics, micro-grids, or for disaster/emergency response. PAX is excited to demonstrate its breakthrough technology for the US Navy.
October 13, 2020 (San Rafael, CA)— The Board of Directors of PAX Scientific is pleased to announce today the award of an SBIR Department of Defense Phase I contract from the US Navy.
PAX has developed a low-temperature process that purifies water and provides for its reuse in a simplified and cost-effective process, regardless of the salinity content and contamination level. The water purification system can use secondary energy sources, such as low-grade heat and solar-thermal, and avoids key issues commonly associated with high total dissolved solids thermal purification such as source variability, corrosion effects, limited access to energy sources, high capital expenses and high operating and maintenance costs.
With this SBIR DoN Phase I contract, PAX is offering an excellent solution for seawater purification, which, combined with state-of-the-art on-site electrolyzers, can be easily deployed in austere conditions to generate hydrogen for energy applications.
September 1, 2019 (San Rafael, CA)—PAX Scientific CEO Jay Harman announced today the launch of PAX’s first consumer product. Flair is both a quiet portable fan and powerful room air-circulator. Fan design hasn’t fundamentally changed in 100 years; PAX’s understanding of natural vortices and high-quality engineering allows Flair to use up to 85 percent less electricity than conventional portable fans.
January 27, 2017 (San Rafael, CA)—The Board of Directors of PAX Scientific announced today the acquisition of its subsidiary, PAX Water Technologies, Inc. by UGSI Solutions, Inc. As described by UGSI Solutions, “PAX Water Technologies is a power brand in the water industry focused on water quality. June 30, 2015 (San Rafael)—PAX Scientific CEO Jay Harman was named one of the 2015 AAAS-Lemelson Invention Ambassadors, Run by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Lemelson Foundation, the program, which “strives to … cultivate a new and diverse generation of inventors and increase global understanding of the role of invention,” is to designed to celebrate and highlight the importance of invention in the modern economy.
The Program’s goal is “to showcase the human face of inventors in order to inform, inspire, and influence thought leaders and global communities.”

May 27, 2013 (San Rafael)—PAX Scientific CEO and co-founder Jay Harman announced today the publication of his book on the business of biomimicry, The Shark’s Paintbrush: Biomimicry and How Nature is Inspiring Innovation. Published by White Cloud Press, the book will be released on June 25, 2013, and is available directly from the publisher or through Amazon.
The book, which explores the many biomimetic technologies currently being developed throughout the world, describes what Harman sees as a “new industrial revolution,” one that is changing industries as diverse as construction, biomedical devices, pharmaceuticals, transportation, and information technology. Additionally, selected applications developed by PAX Scientific (long a flagship for bio-inspired technology), are examined throughout the book.
In an advance review, Publisher’s Weekly said, “[Harman’s] vision of a biomimetic ‘new global economy’ is timely, crucial, and thrillingly eye-opening.”
